Welcome to Frenship High School and Dr. Luft's Home Page.
I am a self-confessed "math nerd" and find math to be very challenging and rewarding to teach. It is challenging because so many students struggle with math, rewarding because I believe that all students can master the basics of math with a little encouragement and effort to learn and follow the rules of math. It is my aim to help students go beyond the basic rules of math to develop a sense about numbers and how math can be applied in real world situations.
Dr. Luft's Educational Background and Teaching Experience
I first moved to West Texas after completing a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education with a minor in Math at Washington State University. After finishing studies at Sunset International Bible Institute (Sunset School of Preaching), I moved to Tuscaloosa, AL and while there began graduate work in Educational Psychology at the University of Alabama. After a year, I married my wife of 39 years (Sue) and two years after that moved back to Lubbock. I later returned to school at Texas Tech University and completed Master's and Doctoral degrees in Family Studies. After spending 4 years in Missouri (Truman State University) and Ohio (The University of Akron) teaching Child and Family Development, our family moved back to Texas. I began my high school teaching career in Roscoe, TX and spent seventeen more years in the Permian Basin teaching high school math and coaching basketball (Midland Lee, Midland High, Fort Stockton). We moved back to Lubbock in 2014 and I taught math at Christ the King Cathedral School and Southcrest Christian School before my first year at Frenship High School in 2016-2017. I am looking forward to my third year at FHS in 2018-2019.
My wife, Sue, and I have been married since 1979. We have two sons, Garrett, who lives in Lubbock, and Chase, who lives in the DFW Metroplex. Garrett and his wife, Kristin have three children, Annie, Hudson, and Hayden. This summer Chase and his wife, Carli, welcomed into the family our 4th grandchild, Maevyn. We are all die-hard Chicago Cubs and Texas Tech Red Raider fans. I also follow Washington State University Athletics as a proud Alum, not as part of "Team Leach." We also follow the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. Our pro basketball allegiances are not so unified. I am also a proud supporter and former student of the defending National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. My sons do not share their father's passion for the Tide.
