Volleyball Claims First District Title since 2013

The Frenship Volleyball team and Head Coach Randi Trew racked up the firsts last Tuesday night as they claimed their first District Championship since Frenship moved up to 6A and the first since 2013. The Tigers (31-8, 8-1) have been dominant throughout the season and have run through District 2-6A in impressive fashion.

On Tuesday, the Tigers played host to the Amarillo Tascosa Rebels who came into the match on the Tigers’ heels. They fought through four hotly contested sets, but the Tigers came out victorious 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 25-19 and claimed the gold ball trophy.

On senior night, Aaliyana Mayfield tallied 12 kills, 1 dig, and 1 ace and became Frenship’s third nominee for Lone Star Varsity Female Athlete of the Week. Previously Gracie Harrison and Kayton Genenbacher have received the award. The winner will be invited to the Lone Star Varsity Awards Banquet at the end of the school year. Harrison led the Tigers in kills with 17 and digs with 30 on the evening and chipped in an ace and 0.5 blocks as well. Hannah Page added in 24 digs and led the team with 3 aces. Jentre Kennedy led with 1.5 blocks and Kendall Mahaney and Genenbacher combined for another 38 digs while Genenbacher led with 48 assists through the match.

After winning the District Title the Tigers went back on the road to face Odessa High. In that contest they earned their fourth District 2-6A sweep of the season, taking down the Bronchos 25-18, 25-18, 25-17. Mahaney led the way defensively with 24 digs while Hannah page added another 21 and Genenbacher led with 1.5 blocks. Gracie Harrison and Aali Mayfield combined for 28 kills and Harrison notched 3 aces.

The Tigers will be back in action for their final match of the regular season on the road against Odessa Permian tonight at 6:00 pm. The Tigers will compete in an as-yet-undetermined warm-up match to get into the rhythm of the playoffs before facing off with an El Paso opponent next week. More details about those contests will be released when available.
