Frenship High School

Speech and Debate Team at State UIL Congressional Debate

The Speech and Debate program at Frenship High School took five students to the State UIL Congressional Debate Championship tournament in Austin, Texas. Will Stephens, Noah McDonald, Javon Deshone, Amber McDonald and Dania Erwin competed through six hours of congressional debate against 58 of the top 6A students in the state.

"This speech and debate team's dedication is phenomenal," said Speech and Debate sponsor, Carrie Hopkins. "They work year-round honing their skills. From attending summer camps and tournaments that require them to wake up from 4-5 AM on Saturdays and staying busy until they get home at 1 AM, all while dressing in business professional attire."

Although the students did not advance to the Capital Congress Finals, they all represented FHS extremely well with their talents and professionalism. They will head to the NSDA District and UIL District competitions at the end of January. Will Stephens and Alex Lopez will also compete in the TFA State Meet in El Paso this March.

"They never cease to amaze me on how current their knowledge and understanding is of politics and international current events," said Hopkins.

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate teams at FHS, and good luck in your future competitions!
