Tiger Volleyball Sweeps District Opener

Frenship Volleyball (6-1, 1-0) have continued their strong 2020 start with back-to-back sweeps following an exciting home victory over crosstown rival Lubbock-Cooper. The Tigers first hosted the Amarillo Tascosa Rebels on Friday, September 25. Frenship made short work of the Lady Rebels improving to 5-1 on the season with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 victory. Frenship’s defense shined in the match led by Lexi Moore with 3 blocks and Jentre Kennedy and Kendall Mahaney each chipping in 2.5 of their own. Gracie Harrison led the way offensively with 12 kills and an ace and chipped in 20 digs as well.

The Tigers hit the road Tuesday, September 29 to open District 2-6A play against new district foe San Angelo Central. The Lady Bobcats couldn’t stand up to the Tigers’ impressive team attack as Frenship swept Central 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. The Tigers were led again by Harrison who had 22 kills, 2 blocks, and 10 digs. Mahaney was once again strong defensively with 27 digs and notched a kill and an ace. The always dependable setter Kayton Genenbacher set the table with 35 assists along with 6 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, and 11 digs. Genenbacher surpassed 2,000 career assists and 200 career kills in this match.

Harrison, who surpassed 600 career kills, received Frenship’s first Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week honor for her performance across these two matches. Harrison was among 11 Tigers to receive the honor in 2019-2020 as well. Athletes receiving the weekly award are invited to the Lone Star Varsity Awards Banquet held in the spring. There, Lubbock-Avalanche Journal’s Lone Star Varsity hands out their annual awards to athletes from across the area. The 2020 event was held virtually with multiple notable athletes and celebrities taking part in the virtual festivities.

The Tigers will take Friday, October 2 off and jump back into action on Tuesday, October 6 hosting the Odessa Permian Panthers (4-2, 1-0) at the Tiger Pit. Permian defeated the Abilene High Eagles in their District 2-6A opener in in four sets.
