The Frenship Girls basketball team played Odessa Permian on Tuesday, January 19 at the Tiger Pit. The Tigers started off strong scoring 24 points in the first quarter – their highest scoring quarter of the game. In the third, they pulled ahead by more than half, scoring 20 more points.

Addison McClure had 17 points and Elena Noyola had 10. Noyola also had five assists and Abby Boyce had seven rebounds. Riley Roberts drew three charges, pushing her total to seven for the year and 44 for her career.

Coach Trent Hilliard said he was excited to play 12 healthy players and that they have been able to get a lot of valuable experience so far this season.

“Depth is one of the most important things to have any year, but this year it is magnified with COVID on top of the usual injuries, sicknesses, etc,” Hilliard said. “We know that we have the best players in the district and that if some of our players are having an off game then we have other players ready to pick up the slack.”

Hilliard said that he believes his team will continue to grow and improve. He said as a team they have been focusing on reducing turnovers and in the game against Permian on Friday, the team had their lowest turnover total in two months.

“Our game Friday will be for the district lead,” Hilliard said. “Midland Lee only has one loss and that was to Frenship back on December 22. Midland is always a tough place to play - Frenship has only lost 3 District games in the last 4 years and 2 of those have occurred in Midland.”

Boys Basketball 

The Frenship Boys basketball team played San Angelo Central on Friday, January 15 at the Tiger Pit. The Tigers had a close game through the first quarter and beginning of the second with four lead changes, but the Tigers stepped ahead early in the second and never looked back.

By the middle of the third quarter, the Tigers lead by almost half. The Tigers held off San Angelo Central and won the game 71-46.

On Tuesday, the Tigers played at Odessa Permian in a close game from start to finish. Both teams held each other for the first five-minutes of the game with no points scored. The lead was tossed between the two teams through the first half and third quarter. The Tigers started the fourth quarter up three, 36-33.

Permian quickly took the lead, but the Tigers answered with each basket, leaving the Tigers tied with Permian at the end of the fourth sending the teams into their first overtime. Permian scored the first points in OT after a defensive foul from Frenship. The Tigers found themselves down by two at 55-57 but TJ Miller drew the foul and was sent to the line where he made both free throws, tying the game and sending it into its second overtime.

The Tigers were on a mission to take home the win when the second overtime minutes started. The Tigers won the tip to gain control of the ball and quickly scored two points. Down the court, TJ Miller drew the foul and was sent back to the line, again making both shots bringing the Tigers to a four point lead. Permian came from behind, making the score 62-61 at the five-second mark. With just seconds left in the game TJ Miller drove the ball in for two points and the Frenship victory over Permian 63-62.

Head Coach Paul Page said he is proud of the way his team played both games.

“It was a good for us to play well and beat Central at home last week, setting up for a pivotal game at Permian on Tuesday,” Page said. “It was another good hard fought game at Permian Tuesday night, and it was huge district win on the road to put us in first place after the first half of district. We are so proud of our team that they were able to respond possession after possession and find a way to win. Great leadership down the stretch was so important.”
