Frenship Girls Basketball Suffers Set Back Last Week but Redeemed Themselves with a Big Win on Tuesday

On Friday, January 22, the Tigers traveled to Midland Lee. The Tigers struggled throughout the game, unable to take the lead at any point, leading them to their first District loss this season.

Coach Trent Hilliard said the game was tough and Midland Lee is a strong team.

“Midland Lee plays great defense and poses problems with 6’3” and 6’1” post players,” Hilliard said. “We couldn’t buy an outside basket and went 3-21 from the 3-point line. Our defense and rebounding were incredible, but we just couldn’t score enough to get the victory.”

The Tigers took on Abilene High at the Tiger Pit on Tuesday, January 26 and bounced back quickly with a record setting win.

In the first quarter alone, the Tigers put 38 points on the board over the mere four points from Abilene High. The Tigers let the Eagles gain a little ground in the second quarter where they allowed 16 points, however the Tigers answered with 23 points of their own, bringing the score to 61-20 at the half.

During the entirety of the second half the Eagles only scored 10 more points to the impressive 35 more points the Tigers banked, leaving the Tigers way ahead at the final buzzer, 96-30.

Hilliard said it was a game for the record books with 96 points scored in a game, previously set last year against Abilene Cooper with 95 points.

“After going 3-21 from the 3-point line against Midland Lee we responded with a 15-34 night with 8 different players hitting 3-point shots,” Hilliard said. “Airron Gaydon (19), Mikah Chapman (12), and Abbi Watson (11) all had career highs in points, Elena Noyola had a career high six assists, and Riley Roberts tied her own school record with three charges taken in a game. It was a complete team effort.”

The Tigers will travel to San Angelo Central Thursday for a makeup game that was originally scheduled for January 15.
