Boys and Girls Basketball Defeat Odessa High

Boys Hoops Continues Rolling Through District

The Tigers (18-4, 9-0) continued their impressive run through District 2-6A with a 77-66 victory at home over the Odessa High Bronchos (10-10, 2-8) on Tuesday, February 2. Frenship was paced offensively by Devin Hartfield and Tracy Godfrey who each tallied 22 points for the Tigers. Tate Beeles chipped in another 16 and Jalen Braziel added 15.

Frenship was without junior guard Tajavis Miller for the second game due to injury. Miller averages 13.1 points per game this season but the Tigers have found ways to step up with a “next man up” mentality. “I love coaching this team,” said Head Coach Paul Page. “There are plenty of guys to step up on this squad and they just keep finding a way to win.”

Frenship is in sole possession of the top spot in District 2-6A with three games remaining. The Tigers are in control of their destiny as they head towards what could prove to be a high-stakes showdown with the Permian Panthers on February 12 to close out the regular season. Frenship beat Permian on the road in a 2OT thriller but will most likely need to win out and beat Permian for a second time to earn the outright District Title.

The Tigers will hit the road Friday, February 5, to face the Midland High Bulldogs at 6:30 pm. Frenship took down the Bulldogs 71-52 when they met in Wolfforth in January. Chois Woodman will be along to bring you the action live on Double T 97.3 FM.

Tiger Girls Extend Record Program Success

On Friday, January 22, Frenship Girls Basketball (19-5, 10-1) lost a frustrating game on the road at Midland Lee 34-29. The Tigers were held under 30 points for the first time in the Trent Hilliard era and no one was happy about it. They followed that game with a complete turnaround against the Abilene High Lady Eagles setting a program scoring record on their way to a 96-30 victory, and they haven’t looked back.

Frenship headed to the Permian Basin to face the Odessa High Lady Bronchos on Tuesday, February 2 and after a slow first half start, went into the locker room with a 37-24 lead. The Tigers cleaned up the mistakes, improved their communication, and attacked on defense to take the contest 73-31 and improve to 10-1 on the season. Senior Airron Gaydon delivered a 16-point performance punctuated by hitting 3 threes on the night. Freshman guard Abbi Holder and Junior post Zaria Fowler each chipped in 10 for the Tigers as all but one Tiger scored on the night and they went 14-20  from the charity stripe.

In that Abilene victory, Frenship sealed up their 19th consecutive playoff berth, an impressive streak of success perpetuated by Hilliard’s extremely successful 7 year run as the Tigers’ head man. Additionally, with the victory over the Bronchos, the Tigers secured their 5th consecutive District 2-6A title with at least a share of the championship. A victory in the final regular season game will seal their third straight outright district crown.

Frenship will host the Midland High Lady Bulldogs (7-9, 2-3) on Friday, February 5 at the Tiger Pit at 6:30 pm. The JV contest that evening has been canceled but the 9th grade and varsity games will continue as scheduled. Frenship’s last matchup with Midland High resulted in a come-from-behind victory that included a buzzer-beating three by Airron Gaydon to force overtime. While the final home game is normally Senior Night, the Tigers already honored their seniors during their district opener against the San Angelo Central Bobcats. This allowed Frenship Boys Basketball coaches (and dads) Paul Page and Chris Roberts to attend. The Tigers will honor their seniors briefly in this final home game during the announcing of the starting lineups.

Keith Patrick will have the game for you live on Frenship.TV, first tip will be at 6:30 pm.
