Frenship Baseball Starts District Play

The Tigers went 4-1 in the First Bank Classic, falling to Lubbock High, but triumphing over Monterey, Randall, and District 2-6A opponents San Angelo Central and Odessa Permian.

Head Frenship Baseball Coach Chad Reynolds said all tournament selections were Coldon Kiser and Jake Sherrard, and Haydden Kennard also had a standout performance on the mound against Permian.

The Midland Lee Rebels defeated the Tigers in a series over Spring Break. After a 8-3 Midland victory in the first game, the Tigers had a long road ahead of them to climb their way to the top of the series. The second game posed an issue for the Tigers as they suffered a 14-7 loss. Ultimately, the Tigers were swept by Midland.

After reeling the losses from the Midland Lee series, Reynolds said he and his team had a good idea of what they needed to work on the most.

“We saw a lot that we need to get better at,” Reynolds said. “There’s not much else to say!”

The team took on the Abilene High Eagles in the first game of the series on Tuesday, March 23 in Abilene. The Tigers were off to a big start but slowly dug themselves a hole when they began the seventh inning down one run.

Accurate hitting and some big breaks broke the deficit though, and lead to Evan Johnson evening the score with a run, followed quickly by two-run singles by Dylan Stephens and Tristin Laughlin to put Frenship on top.

Carter Estill shut out the Eagles in the seventh inning leaving them scoreless. This Tiger victory was much needed and evens them out in District play, 3-3. The Tigers will face the Eagles in the next two games of the series on Friday, March 26 at Frenship and on Saturday on the Eagle’s diamond.

“There is a lot of baseball to be played but with the caliber of teams in this district, we can’t afford to fall too far behind,” Reynolds said. “I expect us to keep improving, keep learning, and play the game hard. We have to do a better job of overcoming adversity as a team and find ways to win close games.”
