Frenship Soccer Rolls into Weekend Play

Boys Soccer

Earlier this week, Frenship Boys Soccer kicked off their season against Dumas High School at the Frenship High School Soccer Pitch, and came out with an impressive victory of eight nil.

Frenship Boys Head Soccer Coach Scott Smith said the way his team competed exceeded his expectations and gave him high hopes for a great season ahead.

“The scoreboard read 8-0 but I was more thrilled that we performed so well,” Smith said. “All aspects of our play: offense, defense and the bit in-between were very good. We had close to 60-percent possession of the ball throughout the game, and 83 ball recoveries in transition, which is very high.”

Goal scorers for the Tigers included Cobi Jones with two goals, Edgar Gonzalez with two goals, Kobe Gonzalez with one goal, and Jon Olivarez with three goals.

To prepare for the crosstown showdown against Lubbock-Cooper tonight, Smith said he hopes his team performs with the same accuracy and stamina.

“We’re ensuring the player readiness scale is optimal for all players involved, and maybe tweaking a couple of things that cropped up during the Dumas game” Smith said. “Additionally, I think we’re all seeing the fruits of our labor from the Fall, and we’re all excited to finally be in ‘game season’ so our boys can show how hard they’ve worked.”

Girls Soccer

Frenship Girls Soccer is gearing up for their season start later this month by competing in several weekend tournaments, hoping to prepare for their first season match on January 25 against San Angelo Central.

Frenship Girls Soccer Head Coach Lauren Denning said she specifically scheduled tournaments to help test her teams’ abilities.

“Players, formations, situations, travel, these are all things we are looking to test during scrimmages and tournaments,” Denning said. “I think we’re all really happy with where we are. I have been seeing a lot of good things, but know it’s a long season and there are still ways we can improve each and every day.”

Denning said the tournament this weekend is exciting for her team with several matches being played at the coveted Toyota Stadium in Frisco.

“We’re excited for our Dr. Pink tournament in Frisco this weekend,” Denning said. “Lots of big teams will be there, including several from West Texas. It will be a good chance to see teams that we may face in playoffs and get some good competition in before district play. It’s also always fun getting to do a big road trip so our girls are excited to have some fun together as well.”

Denning said as she looks forward to the season start, she is excited by the potential her team is showing.

“We have our strongest group top to bottom that we’ve had on Varsity in a long time,” Denning said. “Our defense hasn’t given up a goal yet, which is a complete team effort. We’ve spread out the goals because of how well we’re moving and supporting each other. We’ve moved people around and they’ve stepped up and been ready to go. That is what is going to make us such a dangerous team and just part of what I’m so excited about!”
