Frenship is the first school in the area to start their own competition outside of the Skills USA District Competition.
The Frenship Law Enforcement Courses and Skills USA team was started in 2008 by Javod Deshone with just a handful of students. Now, the program is currently run by Samuel Soto, and as of this school year there are 30 active students in the Law Enforcement Skills USA program.
Frenship High School students can get involved with the program by enrolling in one of the law enforcement classes. Frenship offers Law Enforcement I, Law Enforcement II, and Court Systems and Practices, as well as forensic science courses which are taught by the science department.
The goal of this program is to allow students with an interest in law enforcement to gain insight into what they might do or see in the field. The students learn to handle potential emergency situations in real-time and gain a better understanding of Law Enforcement procedures. In addition, students study the laws in the United States and how they specifically work in Texas.
Frenship law enforcement is fully committed to preparing students for a future in law enforcement, but Soto also works to strengthen students' teamwork dynamic and leadership skills.
In Law Enforcement Skills USA Competition students can compete in Building Clearing and Felony Traffic Stop.
Building Clearing utilizes a team of four students who use tactical methods to go through an area to search for and apprehend suspects, as well as search for simulated contraband.
Those competing in Felony Traffic Stop take a team of two students and simulate a traffic stop of a person who committed a Felony Crime. The students must order the suspect out of the vehicles at simulated gun point, and then proceed to take the individual into custody by handcuffing and conducting a search.
The students competed against Estacado High School, and students from the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC), including Coronado, Monterey, and Lubbock High. There was a total of 56 students participating in the competition. The results are below:
