Frenship Art Students Shine at the Region 17 Art Event

The Visual Arts Scholastic Events, referred to as VASE, are sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association. The region 17 VASE event was held virtually on February 12, where five Frenship High School art students were selected to attend the state event.

The selection process for the state VASE event is extremely rigorous. Before the event, students must provide preliminary sketches of work as well as a description of the research and learning involved in creating the piece, to ensure original work is submitted.

At the VASE event the students submit their art along with an intent form that explains their artistic process and the meaning of their art piece. A judge reviews both the art and the intent form and scores the piece on a rubric, awarding it a score of one-four, four being the highest. The judge then takes all the art from each division that earned a four rating, and they select the top ten percent of those pieces to advance to state.

The five FHS students that were selected to attend the state VASE event represent different programs within the art department at Frenship. One from photography, two from Ceramics and two from Drawing/AP art.

Kandice Burrow, Natalie Brumley, Calli Flournoy, Kaitlyn Brown and Holden Halsted will travel along with their artwork to state VASE event, to be held in San Marcos on April 22nd. They will attend workshops while the work is being judged. To receive a state rating of four is a very prestigious accomplishment.

This is senior Natalie Brumley's third year to qualify for the state VASE event.
