The Dallas High School Musical Awards are considered the regional competition of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, commonly known as the Jimmy Awards. Theatre departments across the region submit their show to Broadway Dallas, who send out judges to watch the performances and then tabulate the scores for nominations. There are 13 categories of awards with a possible 15 nominations for each. This year there were 83 schools who submitted their show for consideration.
One of the nominations Frenship Theatre received was Best Musical, this means they will perform at the Musical Hall at Fair Park, the same stage where shows like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hanse have performed. They also received two Best Lead Performer Nominations for Lynnli Wiseman and Ryan Walshaw. They will compete one more time to earn a spot at the Jimmy Awards in New York City in June.
Frenship has won Best Actor/Actress three times in the last six years, Ryan and Lynnli are hoping to add their names to the list.
The Frenship Theatre Department received the most nominations of any school in the competition this year and stands a real chance at bringing home the top award this year.
“For me, it's never about the awards or nominations.” said Jacob Lierman, Theatre Arts District Coordinator. “It's always about seeing the kids work so hard for a goal, it's just a cherry on the top when it's one of those years that everything aligns.”
