Tiger Tennis Plays in Pirate Invitational

Battling the west Texas wind, the Tigers put on a good show against some very competitive counterparts.

“West Texas tennis is always competitive, and it was fun to see our players compete and build on the past two varsity tournaments,” said Assistant Tennis Coach Shelby May. “The Tigers are improving each week which is exciting to see.”

Girls Singles

Junior Maizy Adams, who just came off of a tournament championship in Keller, brought home the Girls Singles Championship title. Her semi-finals match and finals matches were against very consistent opponents, both of which she won in 3rd set breakers. She won 10-6 in the 3rd set breaker against Lubbock-Cooper.

Freshman Mackenzie West also had a great win over Dumas in Girls Singles, sealing a 6-3, 6-0 victory and finishing the tournament in 7th place.

Boys Singles

In Boys Singles, freshman Preston Lowder won his first round 6-1, 6-1 over Borger. He would lose a very close 11-9 breaker in the second round, but he bounced back against two very tough opponents (West Plains and San Angelo Central) winning both matches in an exciting tiebreaker fashion 2-6, 7-6 (8), 10-6 & 7-6 (4), 3-6, 16-14 to finish in 5th place.

Freshman Aiden Irelan also played in Boys Singles with a first-round match-up vs West Plains. After a close 9-11 tiebreaker loss, he bounced back to win two straight rounds to finish in 10th place.

Girls Doubles

In Girls Doubles, senior Allison Lent and junior Lauren McCombs placed 5th overall. They won their first round 6-0, 6-0 over Denton Ryan, and lost a very close second round match in a tiebreaker 3-10. The duo would battle back and win the next two rounds, including a third-round win over San Angelo Central and an exciting comeback win in their final match of the day, winning 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the tiebreaker against a very good Dumas team.

Also in Girls Doubles, junior Keira Wiles and freshman Katelyn Oakes teamed up to finish 11th place overall. They had good wins over two Borger teams winning 6-2, 7-6 (7) and 6-3, 6-4.

Boys Doubles

In Boys Doubles, the teams of Caleb Lambert/ Carson Smith and Oliver Boyce/Brent Postar both had a great tournament. They both got off to strong starts which made for some exciting doubles action.

Lambert/Smith won their first two rounds 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, and then played a greatly competitive match against district rival San Angelo Central, falling 7-6 (5) 3-6, 10-7. The team of Boyce/Postar also won their first two rounds 6-2, 6-2 and 7-6 (7) 6-4, and then also played a highly competitive match against Lubbock-Cooper, coming up just short 6-7(4), 6-7 (2).

This would set up both Frenship teams to play each other for the 3rd and 4th place match. Lambert/Smith won 3rd while Boyce/Postar earned 4th.

Mixed Doubles

In Mixed Doubles, sophomores Dylan Lambert and Hope Hancock teamed up again to earn 7th place. The duo earned good wins against Lubbock High 6-3, 6-2 and rallied back after being down in the second set to win their final match of the day 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

Freshman Joseph McCombs and senior Bryleigh Rushing teamed up to earn 11th place. They had a good 7-5, 6-3 win over Dumas. They also had an exciting 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 victory over another Dumas team in their final match of the weekend.

“There was a lot of exciting matches played over two days and our coaching staff is proud of how our Frenship Tiger athletes competed,” said May. “We look forward to competing in the next tournament on our schedule in Lake Travis.”
