Frenship’s student council is a group of volunteer students working together to provide a means for student expression, assist in school affairs and activities, encourage student/faculty/community relations, and give students opportunities to gain experience in leadership. Their goal is to promote citizenship, scholarship, leadership, human relations, and cultural values.
The members and sponsors of the Frenship High School Student Council work hard each year to make an impact on the community through several service projects. For the 2022-2023 school year, the high school student council has earned the Outstanding Student Council Award and a Sweepstakes award. This is the seventh time in the past eight years for the Frenship High School Student Council to receive both of these awards.
The Outstanding Student Council Award is awarded for excellence in community service and a commitment to the state theme for this year, which was Kicking Cancer. Earning the sweepstakes award means that the FHS Student Council showed excellence in all four of the major committees: Community Service, Environment and Energy Conservation, School Pride and Patriotism, and Drug, Alcohol, Safety, and Health Awareness (DASH).
“As a whole, the student council finds needs at FHS and in the community and works to fill those needs,” said FHS Student Council Advisor, Courtney Ferguson. “We love to show school spirit by participating in every pep rally and promote kindness by sponsoring at least 4 kindness weeks every year.”
Every year, the council does a big project for the Miracle Pennies Network which supports the NICU unit at the Lubbock University Medical Center (UMC). In addition to raising money, the students volunteer their time at the Boys and Girls Club, St Jude's Children's Hospital, and sponsor a stretch of highway where they pick up trash, Lubbock Impact, and more.
“We also implement the SERVE method within our committees,” said Ferguson. “Servant leadership is everything to Student Council! We would never ask others to do something we weren't willing to get in there and do ourselves.”
Ferguson stated that the council not only promotes their project but aids other student organizations to help make their ideas successful. “We want to promote others and lift them up,” said Ferguson.
This year, the FHS student council had the honor to serve as the district 5 President school and represented our district in the flag ceremony at the state convention.
