Each year the UIL offers the opportunity for Texas high school students to participate in solo and small ensemble events. These events allow students to showcase their talents in a way much different than performing with a large ensemble such as a marching band or a full concert band. Performing individually or with small chamber groups allows students to increase their individual musicianship and engage in musical literature outside of what is taught in the classroom.
Solo & Ensemble events are scheduled in all UIL Music Regions across the state. Students earning a Division One Rating at the region competition are eligible to advance to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) traditionally hosted in Austin on Memorial Day weekend.
The Frenship High School Band won an incredible 154 Division One medals in both solo and ensemble events. Thirty-five solos and 13 ensembles, for a total of 89 band students have qualified for the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest in May.
