Frenship High School

Boys Soccer Wraps Up Strong Season

The Frenship Boys Soccer Team gave this season every ounce of their energy. From rigorous practices to tough games, the Tigers proved that they are passionate about soccer. Before the Spring Break holiday, the team played their final game for the season. The Tigers came up short against San Angelo Central with a final score of 2-0.

Head Boys Soccer Coach Scott Smith would describe this year’s team as a good mix of classifications. He says that the team was very enjoyable to be around, on and off-the-field.

“While some district results were a tad frustrating and a tad unlucky, I believe our athletes still represented themselves, their families, the school, and the program in a very positive manner in terms of behavior and work ethic,” said Coach Smith.

Coach Smith’s favorite part about the team was the culture and dynamic created. He believes that the relationships created on the field will go beyond their high school years.

“I think my favorite part about coaching the team this year involved our organization, communication, and culture,” said Coach Smith. “We believe we helped foster many strong and respecting relationships between athlete-to-athlete and athlete-to-coach. Obviously the old cliche is that a W/L record can help define success, but I also think success can be defined in how relationships are built - relationships that will stretch beyond the athletic environment and post high school.”

One area where he really saw the team excel was through displaying good sportsmanship and servant leadership.

“The areas I saw the team excel and display good sportsmanship mainly involved daily attitudes and daily responsibilities,” said Coach Smith. “For example, athletes providing communication in a timely manner if they were unable to attend a practice, or another example is athletes creating their own equipment duty rotation schedule – taking pinnies home to be washed and brought back the next day. Small details and actions that clearly show responsible stewardship and ownership. The coaching staff know for a fact that we had a team of players, led by seniors and captains, that "owned their program" and I think that's a very important character trait.”

For the eight graduating seniors, their last game felt bittersweet. Coach Smith has enjoyed watching several of them grow up over the years.

“I want to give a shoutout to a couple members of our Class of '24. Cooper Scott, Jeremiah Adams, Arath Villarreal, Ryan Pharis... they were the first tiger soccer campers that we had back in 2018, and now I get to watch them graduate high school,” said Coach Smith. “Since day 1 of camp to Senior Night, I cannot thank them enough for how well-mannered, hard-working, and committed they have been to the Frenship Soccer Program.”
