Frenship Theatre Advances in One Act Play and Secures Nominations for Broadway Dallas

After winning at the district contest, the Frenship High School One Act Play team does it again at the Bi-District Contest. The team secured the champion trophy and four individual awards.

The competition was held at the Frenship High School Performing Arts Center, where the group performed their play, “The Hands of Its Enemy”. The play follows a deaf playwright, Marietta, as she goes through the process of producing a play of her life story. Howard, the director, has recently gone through alcohol rehabilitation and is directing his first play in years. As she navigates the abuse of her childhood and the hard truth of her father's death, the audience watches as an unlikely pair becomes bound together through the journey of this play.

In addition to being named the Bi-District champions, four of the Frenship students received individual awards. Trevon Joseph and Bree Burchett were named All-Star Cast. Carley Nelson received an Honorable Mention All-Star Cast and Katy Bernard earned All-Star Crew.

The One Act Play team is looking to ride their momentum into the Area Contest this weekend at Wylie High School in Abilene. Jacob Lierman, the Frenship High School Theatre Director, stated that One Act Play is excited to take on the area contest.

“This is when the competition elevates, we meet up with the DFW area this round. Only 46 schools are still competing,” said Lierman.

Riding the high of the One Act Play Bi-District win, the Frenship High School Theatre Department received news on their submission for Broadway Dallas. The program earned seven nominations for their musicals this year.

  • Evita - Best Musical
  • Katelyn Quintanilla - Outstand Lead Performer
  • Trevon Joseph - Outstanding Supporting Performer
  • Outstanding Direction
  • Abi Mills and Carley Nelson - Outstanding Music Direction
  • Anastasia - Outstanding Ensemble
  • Bree Burchett - Outstanding Costume Design, Anastasia

The Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards are a branch of the Jimmy's, the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, with over 80 schools from across Texas competing.

Judges were flown out to Wolfforth to watch and score both Frenship musicals. The Broadway Dallas award nominations come from those judges' scores.

After the announcement of their Best Musical Nomination, the Evita cast will travel to Dallas to perform during the awards, putting them on the same stage as all the Boadway tours. Additionally, Frenship High School senior Katelyn Quintanilla will now compete against the other Outstanding Performer nominees for that coveted spot in the Jimmy Awards held in New York City.

“I couldn't be more pleased,” said Lierman. “The awards aren't the reason that we do what we do. It is our goal to tell stories that move people, excite people, entertain people. The Broadway Dallas nominations are just a cherry on top of an already delicious sundae.”

The awards ceremony is May 24th at 7:00 PM at The Musical Hall at Fair Park in Dallas. Tickets can be purchased on the Broadway Dallas website.
