Each year, Frenship High School junior and senior students have the opportunity to apply to participate in Job Shadow Day. This experience provides students with a preview of the workplace and the realistic skills and requirements needed to become employed in their chosen profession. The program allows students to experience a real workday firsthand. 

Participating Students select three careers they are interested in exploring. Based on their preferences, Ira Florez, the Frenship ISD Coordinator of CTE, coordinates placements with local community partners, allowing students to shadow professionals for 2 to 4 hours. Each business provides a hands-on and engaging experience that enhances career exposure and awareness. 

This year, Frenship has over 34 students from dozens of industries participating in Job Shadow Day. Patricia Rodriguez, a junior at FHS, spent the day at the University Medical Health Center, where she shadowed the staff and doctors in the radiology unit. 

“It’s one thing to be explained how things go and what the job duties are for certain titles, but it is an entirely different thing to be able to actually see what it is that you are signing up for or trying to get into,” said Rodriguez. 

The job shadow experience gives students a firsthand look at the workplace, offering insight into the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in their chosen profession. Florez explained how the students gain valuable knowledge about certifications, educational pathways, and industry expectations, helping them make informed future career decisions.  

“This program bridges the gap between education and the workforce, allowing students to connect classroom learning to real-world careers while also building professional networks,” said Florez. 

Frenship High School’s Job Shadow Day continues to be a valuable experience, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to take their next steps toward a successful career. Thanks to the support of local businesses and the community, this program continues to shape the next generation of professionals.
