The Frenship High School tennis team recently completed their spring season, and Assistant Coach Shelby May reflected on the growth and determination the team showed throughout the year.
“This tennis season was a powerful journey of perseverance, growth, and determination,” said Coach May. “From the very start of the fall, our team faced unexpected challenges. But instead of giving up, the team came together, supported one another, and kept pushing forward.”
Coach May described how practices became more than just routines.
“Each practice became more than just a routine, it became an opportunity to learn, both as athletes and as individuals. Our student-athletes learned how to adapt, how to stay mentally strong, and how to lift each other up even in the toughest moments. Every setback turned into a lesson, and every hard-fought match made them stronger and more connected as a team.”
The season produced some standout performances.
“This season, we were lucky to witness some truly great performances. Both doubles teams of Justin Miller and Dylan Lambert (a freshman and senior duo) and a singles player named Aiden Ireland who brought energy, focus, and excellence to every match,” said Coach May.
Both the doubles team and Aiden qualified for the regional tournament after tough competition in District 2-6A. Coach May praised the doubles duo for their teamwork.
“Our doubles team had great chemistry on the court, sharp communication, and elite strategy made them a force to be reckoned with. Match after match, they demonstrated not just skill, but trust in one another, covering each other’s weaknesses and capitalizing on every opportunity.”
On the singles side, Coach May highlighted two key players, Preston Lowder and Aiden Ireland.
“Preston Lowder and Aiden Ireland had to play each other for a chance at a playback in district. They competed hard,” said Coach May. “For Aiden, whether dominating the baseline or chasing down every ball, this athlete played with heart and focus, turning difficult matchups into personal victories. His mental toughness and growth over the season were inspiring, showing what it means to compete with class and confidence no matter how tough the obstacle was that was thrown at him.”
The season reached exciting heights during the district tournament.
“At the district tournament, our players stepped up in a major way. The level of focus, energy, and competitive spirit was unmatched. Several players advanced deep into the brackets, proving that all the hard work, early practices, and tough matches throughout the season paid off,” said Coach May.
She also shared how the team performed at Lake Travis.
“We faced some of the toughest competitions of the year and rose to the challenge. The doubles teams played with sharp smart decision making and fearless strategy, while our singles players showed off endurance, smart decision-making, and determination under pressure. Almost every player on our team placed and earned a medal or trophy.”
Coach May explained the importance of spring tennis in preparation for the next season.
“Spring tennis plays a key role in building momentum and setting a strong foundation for success in the upcoming fall season. It’s a chance to sharpen skills, strengthen teamwork, and grow confidence on the court while we travel to some of the top tournaments around the state.”
She added, “During spring, players have the opportunity to focus on one event, compete hard at each tournament with the goal of making it beyond district play all while refining technique, experimenting with strategy, and gaining valuable match experience.”
With a strong foundation and growing confidence, the Tigers are looking forward to building on this season’s success. Great work, Frenship Tennis!
