Course Goals & Description:
This course is designed to teach the introductory elements of interpersonal communication, public speaking and critical thinking and listening skills. Basic speech structure, written communication and career relevance will also be discussed as students participate in a variety of projects and activities to help them become successful in the future. The ultimate goal is to help students gain confidence in their oral and written communication skills and to understand how being an effective communicator will help them in their personal and professional lives.

Grading Policy:
The Professional Communications course will follow the official FHS grading Policy which is found below.
GRADING REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 10 grades shall be entered per subject per six weeks. Grading assessments are made up of two categories, formative and summative. There must be at least two summative assessments at the end of the six weeks (one by progress reports and one by end of the six-week period).
Grades will be recorded in the teacher gradebook (skyward) weekly.
A minimum of 1 grade per week / 5 grades by progress reports / 10 grades by the end of the six-week period.
Grades recorded in the gradebook should be linked to key understanding, performance assessments, or TEKS student expectations.
MAKE-UP WORK:
For every school day absent, the student has two class days for completion of missed assignments.
Administrators have the discretion to modify this guideline due to extenuating circumstance.
Students should make every effort to gather and complete work prior to a school sponsored absence.
Time allowed for makeup work due to a school-sponsored activity should be in accordance with the makeup work for all absences.
Students may correct/redo work to receive credit up at a 90.
LATE WORK:
For each school day that an assignment is late, a 10%-point deduction will be applied.
Students who turn in assignments after the due date forfeit their opportunity to redo their assignment for the max credit offered when making up work (the initial late grade dedication will still be in place for the redo).
A repeated pattern of late work may include further interventions and/or consequences.
