My name is Rebecca Gonzales, and I teach Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 at FHS. I have taught grades 1, 3, 5, 8, and now high school. 

Learning a second language is so important.  Being bilingual has opened many doors for me in my life, and my hope is that my students realize the importance of being able to communicate using the Spanish language.  We will read, write, listen and speak Spanish all year long.

General Information

Description

Learning how to communicate using the Spanish language is important because we live in an ever-growing global community. To be more marketable and more successful in your future career, it is critical to learn a second language. In Spanish class, emphasis is placed on communicating through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You will study Hispanic culture, geography, and history. You will participate in individual, paired, and group activities as well as complete written and oral exercises to practice new concepts. In any given week, you will read many stories, carry on short conversations with the teacher and other students, perform short and playful skits, write- rewrite stories, and translate pieces of text.  This might sound impossible, but I will give you every tool you need, little by little, to be successful. While you might not think you can do it, I know you can!

Before and after school:

I am not available before school on Wednesdays due to PLCs. Other than that, please feel free to see me at 8:40 a.m. If that doesn't work for you and you need to meet with me, I can meet after school for extra help or to finish an assignment due to absences only if you set up an appointment.  It is up to you to make arrangements with me.   

The Expected Behaviors

1. Be prepared, in your seat and ready to start when the bell rings.
2. When I am speaking, please be silent and listen. When you hear my voice as I begin to teach, I expect you to pause whatever you are doing and give me your full attention.
3. Respect others, be positive, and have fun as we learn! Hateful comments take away from every student’s freedom to express him\herself which is key to development in a new language. Any words or comments that would put down any person will be regarded as highly offensive and will result in appropriate disciplinary action.
4. Follow directions when given the first time.  Ask for clarification if you are confused.
5. Leave personal conversations, personal grooming/make-up, and perfumes/sprays outside my classroom.
6. Each student is responsible for his/her own learning. Cheating will result in the grade of a zero with no opportunity for a re-do, and I will contact your parents/guardians and your principal.
7. Because we will be using Schoology and other digital platforms both in class and outside of class, you will be expected to maintain your school issued device in good working condition.  If something is wrong with it, please follow the proper procedure to report the problem and get it fixed. Not having your computer will make you fall behind.
8. Backpacks will be placed along the wall closest to the door for the entire period.  If you need access to it, please ask for permission to access it. This will help keep the isles clear.  (I walk around and monitor a lot!)
9. Speaking is historically a Spanish student’s weakness.  Class participation is required and expected.  I will frequently give speaking grades.  I can’t grade silence. We will all make countless mistakes, but we will work together to fix them.
10. Spanishdictionary.com is the resource allowed in class. Google Translate is not a reliable source.
    
    

Failure to follow the expected behaviors will result in the following consequences:

Phone policy

Phone will be out of sight (in your backpack) and powered off at all times during the school day.  We follow the HB1418 phone regulation and our district discipline policy. 

Restroom policy

1. Students may go to the restroom during passing periods or during independent work times only with an electronic pass.
2. Students may not leave during lecture/instruction time.
3. An e-hall pass is required.
4. No more than one student may go at a time.
5. You may not be gone for longer than 8 minutes. Excessive time spent outside of the classroom will be documented and reported to your principal. If you feel sick, please let me know.

• 1 composition notebook (wide ruled or college ruled)
• Laptop and charger
• Pencils (any kind)
• (Girls) Kleenex boxes---as many as you want to bring
• (Boys) Disinfectant wipes or hand sanitizer---choose one or both
• We will create/design various projects throughout the year. I will provide most of the supplies needed. If I need you to provide anything at that time, I will let you know at least one week in advance.

Late Work and Absences

REDO’S

o All students shall be allowed a reasonable opportunity to redo any assignment or assessment. The maximum grade a student can earn on a redo is 90% level of mastery.

o Students have until the next class period that they are present to request a redo opportunity once the grade is posted to Skyward and students have been notified about their grade.

o The purpose of re-teaching and re-assessment is to allow students who have not yet demonstrated mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills additional opportunities to learn.

o To support student learning, teachers will provide appropriate interventions for students before they re-do work.

o Student work quality and mastery of assignment/skill/learning must be reflected in the grade given to the student.

MAKE-UP WORK

o For every school day absent, the student has two class days for completion of missed assignments (this includes school sponsored activities). Administrators have the discretion to modify this guideline due to extenuating circumstance.

o Students should make every effort to gather and complete work prior to a school sponsored absence. Time allowed for makeup work due to a school-sponsored activity should be in accordance with the makeup work for all absences.

LATE WORK

o For each school day that an assignment is late, a 10 point deduction will be applied.

o Students who turn in assignments after the due date forfeit their opportunity to redo their assignment for full credit (late penalty points will still be deducted from the redo grade).

o A repeated pattern of late work may include further interventions and/or consequences.
