Frenship Boys Golf Shines Again to Open Spring Season

The Tigers traveled to Fort Worth to participate in the Eaton Invitational last weekend and once again found themselves at the top of the leaderboard, but the weekend was not without its hiccups. The Tigers were playing at The Golf Club at Champions Circle, a course none of them had seen before.

“Despite not playing to our best capabilities, we still came away with another first place showing,” said Head Boys Golf Coach Dan McDonald. “Going back to the fall, this is the fourth consecutive tournament that these guys have won. They are playing with a lot of confidence, but they also know that we have bigger fish to fry.”

Those fish McDonald speaks of can be found at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown on May 17th, when the UIL State Tournament is scheduled to be held. Frenship has a long road to travel to get there with tough competition in between.

At Eaton, the Tigers finished the first day tied for first place with Argyle with a team score of 307. A weekend best 304 on Saturday gave the Tigers the final lead as Argyle posted a 319 on Saturday, and Byron Nelson, already 5 strokes behind, posted a second best 314 on Saturday to tie Argyle for runner up.

All four Tigers finished in the top 10 individually as Vargas finished second overall with a 72/71, ending up 3 strokes off the leader from Argyle. Welch brought home 4th with a 153, Leyton Hiebert took 6th with 156, and Riley Spoon 9th with a 159.

Frenship will be back in action February 26-27 making the long trip to Glen Rose to compete in the Centennial Springs Invitational at Squaw Valley Golf Course. You can keep up with Frenship Boys Golf by following them on Facebook and Twitter @Frenship_Golf.
