Frenship Falls in Homecoming Game Against Abilene High

The spirit was alive as Peoples Bank Stadium was packed with fans for the 2021 Homecoming football game against Abilene High. The Tigers started off with a bang when they began with the longest kick return of the season and in only two-plays scored a quick touchdown.

After the strong start, Frenship fell into a hole for the remainder of the first half, while Abilene High had a stellar ground game. Early on the score was tied 7-7, but as Frenship struggled to respond on both sides of the ball, the Eagles soared through the game to end it 48-28.

Frenship Head Football Coach Jay Northcutt said that Abilene High is a good team with a solid foundation.

Abilene is a well-rounded team that offensively is very diverse and good at a variety of styles of offense which always presents a challenge,” Northcutt said. “We had a hard time getting them off the field defensively, and even though we had big offensive numbers in terms of yards, we didn't cash in in the red zone, which put us behind in trying to keep up with a team like Abilene.”

Coach Northcutt expressed that his team had so many good things going on and that he was proud of several players that stood out.

“Brooks Roberson had 10 Catches for 164 yards and one touchdown,” Northcutt said. “Landon Hutcheson had five catches for 93 Yards, Andrew Braddock had five catches for 97 Yards and one touchdown. Gavin Phillips also had five catches for 83 Yards, and Chad Pharies banked 457 yards passing, had two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.”

Coach Northcutt said missing Tate Beeles has been tough, but his stand-in has truly stepped up.

“Brooks Roberson is almost as tall as Tate, at one point we thought we might could pass him off as Tate by putting him in Tate's #11 jersey,” Northcutt said.  “As a sophomore, Brooks Roberson who we moved up from the Junior Varsity level after Tate's injury. has played well. He is a sure handed, gritty, and a talented player that is only going to continue to get better and better.”

Northcutt said that the rest of the season is still hanging in the balance.

“We still have a chance, but our future is not in our hands,” Northcutt said. “We will need the stars to align just right in how our district plays out to have a chance to get in post-season.”

The Tigers have a bye-week tonight and will be focusing on the road ahead before playing Odessa High on the road next week on October 29.
