For the 2022-2023 Esports season, Frenship High School brought home the state championship title in Overwatch and Rocket League Unified. With the program only in its third year, these accomplishments are testament to the students and coaches' commitment to the program.
Since the start in 2019, the program has continued to grow to incorporate more Esports games to provide more opportunities for our students, including a new Unified league that is a partnership with Special Olympics.
Frenship Esports competes through the PlayVS program. Their unique approach combines the recognition of state-sanctioned sports with an innovative technology platform, providing great value for student competitors and a sustainable business model to ensure a stable future for high school Esports.
In the regular season, Frenship Overwatch Blue Team went 6-2. At the state contest, they faced the number four team in the state and beat them in the first round of playoffs and the competition level only went up from there.
They then faced off with the first ranked team and upset them in the semi-finals. For finals Frenship went up against the number two team and beat them in an impressive reverse sweep of 3-2. The Frenship team of seven came back from a loss in the two rounds to claim the State Overwatch Championship title, by winning in the last three rounds.
Overwatch is not the only state championship Frenship Esports claimed this season. In the Unified Rocket League competition with teams throughout the central United States, Frenship clinched the league Championship title.
The Frenship Unified Rocket League team played in the finals against Ironwood High School in Arizona. The team won the best of seven series with four wins and one loss.
“The guys were super excited and proud to bring home the trophy for Frenship,” said Esports coach Nicholas Copeland.
