For the last 10 years the Health Science program at Frenship High School has provided high school students with hands-on experience and the opportunity to earn certifications in their respective practicums.
Right now, the Health Science program offers 3 practicums: Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, all of which are taught by nurses.
CNA Program Director and Health Science Instructor Melissa Rose, says that many students who participate in the Health Science program and receive their certification can immediately enter the healthcare field.
“As Registered Nurses, we want to honor and recognize our students who put in countless hours of studying, practicing healthcare skills, and serving patients during clinical hours/rotations and earned their National Certification for each of these practicums,” said Rose. “The students honored at the pinning are now Nationally Certified in their Health Science Practicum and could walk out and get a job today in our clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and long-term care settings. Many already have done that. Pinning our students welcomes them into the health care culture as professionals.”
The Health Science program is unique to Frenship because it provides many options for students. It allows students to discover which field they might want to pursue out of high school, and it allows them to learn from Health Science professionals.
“We have 5 dually credentialed instructors who are SBEC certified for Health Science and maintain nursing licensure that teach our classes full time. We offer Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. Some students seek multiple certifications. The students in the Health Science Program are not only prepared for the workforce, but have a head start in whichever Health Care career they aspire to pursue,” said Rose.
65 seniors and 3 juniors were honored at the Pinning Ceremony this week.
