Since its launch in 2019, the Frenship Esports program has steadily grown, with students earning placements at state-level competitions each year. The Texas Scholastic Esports Federation or TexSEF, is a teacher-led nonprofit organization that brings students from across the state together to compete in tournaments, attend conferences, and explore opportunities at college fairs.
Esports provides students with a dynamic way to engage with their school community. As a rapidly growing field, more colleges are adding esports programs each year, many offering scholarships. Beyond competition, esports helps students develop valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, strategic planning, and adaptability.
At the recent TexSEF State Esports Competition, Frenship students competed in Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. The competition holds pool play with eliminations, similar to the Esports World Cup, to narrow down the competitors.
The Frenship Varsity Overwatch team earned an impressive sixth-place finish, while the JV team came in 19th. The Varsity Rocket League team placed 20th overall. In the Super Smash Bros. bracket, Aiden Alomari secured 20th out of 139 players, with Adrian Grady close behind in 36th.
Frenship Esports coach Brian Singletary stated that the level of competition at this year’s state tournament was especially high, but he remains proud of his students’ dedication and performance throughout the season.
“I am so proud, especially when you think about it in terms of the state of Texas,” Singletary said. “We played extremely hard and did the best we could.”
Singletary explained that the team’s determination was on display during the Overwatch elimination rounds. In one standout moment, player Jaxon Pleasant was the last teammate remaining on the cart, facing off against three opponents. In a show of lighting fast reflexes, he was able to overcome them and helped secure the win for the team.
Although the season has come to a close, Frenship Esports is already looking ahead. The program plans to expand into additional titles next year, including Fortnite, Valorant, and Apex Legends.
Congratulations to all the Frenship students who competed at state!
