Last week, 31 Frenship Ninth Grade Center Dual Language and English as a Second Language students had the opportunity to visit South Plains College. As they toured the campus, they heard from SPC staff and professors who shared information regarding life as a college student and the various programs available to students.
Mayra Hook, a Ninth Grade Center Spanish Teacher, and Yvette Mesa, the ESL Teacher, organized this trip to support their classroom efforts to support college and career readiness.
“We wanted to give these students exposure to higher education opportunities, especially since many of them are first-generation students,” said Hook. “We wanted them to see that college is a real option for them and help build their confidence and motivation for the future.”
The campus tour was led by Admissions Counselor Abby Whatley, who provided valuable information about financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and housing. Students explored various buildings, classrooms, and common areas across the college.
As they visited each location, students had the chance to learn about a range of specialized programs, including welding, auto mechanics, cosmetology, and nursing. They heard from current instructors and staff who explained enrollment requirements, the certifications or licenses offered, and what to expect in terms of salary and typical work hours in each field.
Hook explained that for many of the ninth graders, this is their first time on a college campus and getting to explore in-person was invaluable.
“We think that giving them the opportunity to see firsthand helped make college more real,” said Hook. “It leaves an impression on our students who might not otherwise get this kind of exposure.”
The visit to South Plains College gave students a meaningful glimpse into life beyond high school and opened their eyes to the various opportunities available. Through this in-person experience, students not only gained practical knowledge about college and career pathways but also left feeling inspired and empowered to pursue their goals.
With the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, Hook and Mesa are already looking into coordinating more college visits in the future.
