Each year the UIL offers the opportunity for Texas high school students to participate in solo and small ensemble events, allowing students to showcase their talents in a way much different than performing with a large marching band or a full concert band. Performing individually or with small chamber groups allows students to increase their individual musicianship and engage in musical literature outside of what is taught in the classroom. 

Solo & Ensemble events are scheduled in all UIL Music Regions across the state, and students earning a Division One Rating at the region competition are eligible to advance to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC).

Frenship High School Band won 117 Division One medals with 27 solos and 11 ensembles, for a total of 65 students advancing to the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble contest. Frenship Memorial High School Band won 43 Division One medals with 31 solos and 12 ensembles, for a total of 22 students advancing to the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble contest.
