Frenship High School Dancer Secures Spot on Award-Winning Collegiate Dance Team

Brogan Richards, a senior and varsity Pom member at Frenship High School, is taking the next step in his dance career after being recruited to the nationally recognized University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebel Girls & Company. Known for their competitive excellence, the Rebel Girls & Company have earned multiple Division IA Hip Hop and Game Day National Championships, as well as ICU World Championship titles, and regularly perform at high-profile events like America’s Got Talent, the NBA Summer League, and the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Opening Ceremony.

According to Frenship High School Dance Teacher and Varsity Pom Coach Melissa Oakeley, college dance follows a unique and highly competitive path compared to traditional sports. Rather than a structured recruiting system, dancers often rely on competitive tryouts or must build visibility through clinics, workshops, and networking opportunities. Richards’ recruitment places him among a select group of dancers recognized at the highest level.

Oakeley emphasized that this achievement is comparable to a Division I athletic recruitment to one of the top programs in the country, highlighting the significance of Richards’ accomplishment within the dance community. She added that recognition at this level is rare for dancers from West Texas, making this a proud moment not only for Richards and his family, but also for Frenship ISD and the Lubbock community.

“Brogan has elite-level talent—he’s truly one of the strongest athletes I’ve ever had the privilege to coach,” said Coach Oakeley. “He’s one of those rare performers you simply can’t take your eyes off of. His technique is exceptional, but what really sets him apart is his presence and his ability to connect with an audience.”

Beyond his performance ability, Oakeley highlighted Richards’ impact on team culture.

“He’s like a brother to everyone on the team—constantly encouraging others, investing in our success, and always looking for ways to support the group. He cares deeply about how we perform and the standard we represent. The energy in the room genuinely shifts when Brogan walks in, and it’s always for the better,” said Coach Oakeley.

Richards’ journey in dance began at age 10 after transitioning from competitive gymnastics. He discovered his passion after trying a recreational dance class, a decision that ultimately shaped his future.

“Having the opportunity to dance for UNLV is a dream come true,” said Richards. “Being able to dance for a national championship team has always been a dream of mine.” He added that he looks forward to growing as a dancer and connecting with a diverse group of teammates.

Throughout high school, Richards remained committed to refining his craft and pursuing opportunities within the dance world. Oakeley explained that from his freshman year, he intentionally worked to gain exposure by attending top recruitment clinics and workshops, building connections, and positioning himself for success.

“The dance world doesn’t hand you a clear path—you have to create it,” said Coach Oakeley. She noted that Richards’ ability to gain visibility among elite programs is a testament not only to his talent but also to his determination and character.

His dedication has also translated into success on the team level, as he recently helped lead Frenship Pom to a national championship title.

Oakeley shared that watching Richards’ growth over the past four years has been one of the most rewarding parts of her career. She recalled revisiting videos from his freshman year and recognizing how far he has come through consistent effort and self-motivation.

“Brogan is the kind of person who believes he can do anything—and then goes and proves it. Every week, he’d run up to me, excited to show a new skill he had taught himself. He studies other dancers, sees something inspiring, and thinks, ‘I’m going to do that too,’ and then he does,” said Coach Oakeley.

Richards credits his time on Frenship Pom for shaping both his abilities and his character.

“Being on the Frenship Pom Team has given me the opportunity to develop my dance skills and my character. Without the years and experiences on Pom, I truly believe I would not be in the position I am today,” said Richards.

As he prepares to join UNLV, Richards is most excited about continuing his development at the collegiate level and competing alongside new teammates.

“I’m most excited about continuing my growth as a dancer at a collegiate level and being taught by amazing coaches,” said Richards. “Also having the opportunity to compete with new teammates at UDA and representing my program.”

Looking ahead, Richards hopes to pursue a professional career in dance and eventually open his own studio to share his passion with others.

Oakeley believes his future is bright and that his story will inspire others in the community. She described his recruitment as a milestone moment for Frenship and a reflection of what is possible through hard work and support.

“This is the kind of accomplishment that puts our community on the map in the dance world,” said Coach Oakeley. “We are so proud of Brogan! Keep your eyes out for him; he is destined for great things ahead!”

Congratulations, Brogan Richards!
