Tapping Into a New Tradition at Frenship High School

Thursday mornings look a little different in the Frenship High School dance studio, where teachers are trading their coffee cups for tap shoes and starting the day with a little rhythm.

Frenship High School Dance Department Chair and JV Pom Coach Courtney Ferguson leads a weekly tap class for FHS staff members every Thursday from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. The class was created as a fun way for teachers to step away from the demands of the school day, learn a new skill, and spend time together.

“I have so many teachers tell me that they want to join my tap classes during the day.... but time becomes a factor when you teach 7 classes a day," said Ferguson. "The genre of tap dance is so rich in history and is such a unique and fun skill; I thought creating a fun way for us to get together outside of class time would not only allow me to share my love for tap with the faculty but also create some fun bonding time for my teacher friends. Plus, I cannot think of a better way to start your day then tapping!”

Ferguson was surprised to see 10 teachers attend the first class, and the group has continued to grow. She has especially enjoyed watching staff members choose tap shoes that match their personalities.

For Frenship High School Speech and Debate teacher Heather Byars, the class has quickly become a favorite part of her week.

“It has been something I look forward to every Thursday morning. It is challenging in the best way. To get to "play" with my peers is so rewarding. We don't get to do that much during the school year," said Byars.

The class is designed specifically for FHS staff members, with the 8:45 a.m. ending time allowing teachers plenty of time to transition before the first-period bell at 9 a.m.

Beyond the fun, Ferguson said tap provides benefits for both the mind and body.

“Beyond being a blast, tap dance is an incredible workout for both the mind and body! Physically, it builds endurance and balance. Mentally, it boosts memory and focus. It is the perfect low-pressure outlet for not only teachers, but for anyone who needs to shake off a stressful day," said Ferguson.

For these Frenship teachers, Thursday mornings are becoming a time to learn, laugh, and, most importantly, tap into a little fun before the school day begins.
