ASU’s Generative A.I. Policy

OP 10.26 Use of Generative AI Tools by Students

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Operating Policy/Procedure (OP) is to set institutional guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools by students in the completion of any academic work, including but not limited to, in-class or homework assignments, research papers or projects, theses, dissertations, essays, examinations, tests, quizzes, or any other materials produced by a student in fulfillment of course or degree requirements, regardless of the modality by which the course or program is delivered.

REVIEW:

This OP will be reviewed in September every three years by the Office of the Provost with recommended revisions forwarded through the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to the President.

POLICY/PROCEDURE

Large language model generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DALL-E, and others, are being widely used today in business and industry to develop content on a certain topic in a matter of seconds. However, by their very nature generative AI tools produce content that is based on previously published materials. As a result, the use of such content by students as part of an academic assignment without proper citation of the original source constitutes plagiarism and is therefore a violation of the ASU Part I – Code of Student Conduct Section B.1.a. Academic Misconduct.

The use of any generative AI tools by students to complete academic coursework is therefore prohibited unless the instructor of record explicitly states in the course syllabus that:

Generative AI tools may be used in the class; and

Those portions of the student’s submitted work which contain content produced by the use of generative AI tools must be properly cited and attributed to the originating source.

Even when permitted by the instructor and properly cited, the content produced by generative AI tools may be inaccurate or incomplete, and often contains spurious references. Students are forewarned to exercise appropriate caution when using such content.
